Mackerel with Japanese Ginger Sauce recipe

This Asian-inspired mackerel dish has bags of flavour - mackerel is served with an easy peasy ginger sauce made with sesame oil, ginger, soy sauce, sake, mirin and spring onions. On the table in less than 15 minutes!

  • 4 mackerel fillets, boned
  • 2 spring onions
  • 1 tsp. sesame oil
  • 2 tsp. minced ginger
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp. sake
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. mirin
  • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper

Method of Preparation:

  1. Season the fish both sides with salt and pepper. Rub with the vegetable oil. Heat a frying pan over a high heat and cook the mackerel on both sides for 3-4 minutes or less, depending on the thickness of the fish, until cooked through.

  2. Finely slice the spring onions. Mix the spring onions, sesame oil, minced ginger, soy sauce, sake and mirin in a bowl. Spoon over the cooked fish fillets to serve.

If desired, garnish with some coriander or more finely sliced spring onions. Recipe serves 4.
